Man, since he came down from the trees,
He worked upon the land, created tools by hand,
And traded on the seas,
Worked his fingers to the bone,
To build himself a home,
To make a family,
And the need to keep himself alive,
And do more than just survive,
To live and love and laugh,
Drives him on to bigger, better things,
Ideas sprouting wings,
To build communities,
And to work in factories...
Man, forged in fire, made of steel,
With his master at the wheel,
Driving engines powered by coal.
A man might lose his life,
But he'll never lose his soul,
And he'll always have his pride,
If he keeps his family safe and warm,
The more to life he gives, the more it takes away,
But he's grateful for the work, and he's thankful for the pay,
The gods of industry and pain,
Those profiteering lives of gain,
Surveying all that they have made,
And saying it is good...
Men of coal, men of steel,
Working ideas into something real,
Subduing the earth, creation of power,
The wealthiest nation in its finest hour,
Men of sweat, men of blood,
Digging the dirt, making good,
Turning the wheels of a revolution,
Our great and glorious revolution,
Holes dug deep into the core,
Are ghosts of what was there before,
When men knew what their lives were for,
But now I'm staring at the screen,
Googling what a life had been,
And asking what does it all mean?
